Ingrown hairs and folliculitis: the back, the buttocks, the bikini line

Why it always comes back in the same places, and the four habits that change everything.

The treatment room, the cherry tree and the large window

An ingrown hair is a hair that has stayed under the skin: either the opening of the follicle has closed over under a layer of dead cells, or the hair, cut at an angle, grows back curving inwards. The skin treats that hair as a foreign body, and inflammation does the rest.

Why those areas

Bikini line, buttocks, nape, thighs, beard: these are the places where three factors add up — a thick curly hair, repeated shaving or hair removal, and constant friction. Skin with curly hair is more exposed, not through fragility but through geometry: a curved hair is more likely to dive back in.

Ingrown hair or folliculitis?

An ingrown hair is isolated, hard, sometimes with a hair visible in a loop under the skin. Folliculitis givesnumerous pustules, all alike, centred on the follicles, which often itch. The first is treated mechanically; the second is an infection or an overgrowth of yeast, and it calls for treatment.

The four habits that really change things

  • Leave the skin alone.Extracting it yourself with non-sterile tweezers turns an ingrown hair into an abscess, then into a brown patch that lasts a year.
  • Exfoliate gently and regularly, twice a week. It is the layer of dead cells that closes the opening: that is what you are aiming at, not the hair.
  • Shave in the direction of the hair, on damp skin, with a new blade. A “closest possible” shave against the grain cuts the hair below the surface: it grows back shut in.
  • Change after sport.Maceration under damp fabric does more for folliculitis than any product.

What we do at the practice

A targeted body treatment deep-cleanses the whole surface of the area, frees the hairs already caught without traumatising the skin, and calms the inflammation. On the buttocks and the back, it is also a question of access: these are areas that call for someone else's hand.

In the medium term, permanent laser hair removal, carried out at the practice, acts on the cause itself: fewer hairs, so fewer hairs working their way in.

When to see a doctor

A lesion that is hot, painful, growing, with a fever, or pustules spreading quickly: that is an infection and it is treated medically. Recurring painful nodules in the armpits, the groin or under the breasts suggest a chronic inflammatory disease that has its own treatment — and the earlier it is caught, the better it is controlled.
